08FAQ

VAT registration in Egypt: questions

What is the Egypt VAT registration threshold?

VAT registration is compulsory once your turnover reaches EGP 500,000, according to the Egyptian Tax Authority's FAQ, checked in October 2026. The EGP 250,000 figure that circulates online is wrong. Some businesses must register at any turnover, including importers for trade, exporters, distribution agents and table-tax suppliers.

How often do I file VAT returns in Egypt?

Standard VAT returns in Egypt are monthly, due by the end of the following month. Businesses under the simplified regime of Law 6/2025 file VAT quarterly instead, within the month after each quarter ends. When a deadline falls on an official holiday, the ETA extends it. We prepare the return, tell you the amount due and file it on time.

Does my café or restaurant in Sharm El Sheikh charge VAT?

A tourist restaurant or café licensed by the Ministry of Tourism charges VAT at 14%. Under the ETA's guidance of May 2025, a non-tourist outlet is exempt unless it is in a mall, compound, tourist site or airport, belongs to a chain or known brand, sells through apps or websites, offers tourist-standard service or charges a service fee.

Can I get a refund of excess input VAT?

Yes. Excess input VAT can be refunded once the credit has carried forward for more than four tax periods; for businesses under Law 6/2025 the wait is three months. A claim stands on clean records: purchases backed by e-invoices or e-receipts, and returns that match them. We prepare the claim and answer the ETA's questions on it.

Do I pay VAT on services bought from abroad?

Yes. Services you receive from outside Egypt fall under the reverse charge: your business, as the recipient, works out the VAT on the service and declares it in its own return. Fees from a foreign consultant or an overseas agency are typical cases. We include these purchases in your VAT return every period, next to your local sales and purchases.
