FAQ
Questions about the simplified regime
How is tax calculated under Egypt’s simplified regime?
Take your annual turnover, find its band and multiply the whole amount by that band’s rate: 0.4%, 0.5%, 0.75%, 1% or 1.5%. The rate is not applied slice by slice: EGP 1,000,000 of sales gives EGP 5,000 of tax for the year, all at 0.5%. Costs and profit play no part in the calculation.
Is the lowest simplified-regime rate 4% or 0.4%?
It is 0.4%. Some news sites print the first band of Law 6/2025 as 4%, but the law sets 0.4% of turnover for annual turnover below EGP 500,000. On EGP 400,000 of sales that is EGP 1,600 for the year, not EGP 16,000. Every band in the law sits between 0.4% and 1.5% of turnover.
Can a freelancer or consultant join the simplified tax regime?
Freelance professionals are covered by Law 6/2025 if their annual turnover is EGP 20 million or less. Consultancies are the exception: one that earns 90% or more of its income from one or two clients is excluded, whatever its turnover. A consultant who bills 90% of their fees to a single hotel group is the typical excluded case.
What happens if my turnover goes above EGP 20 million?
A business already in the regime that passes EGP 20 million once, by no more than 20% (so up to EGP 24 million), keeps the 1.5% rate for that year. A larger or repeated overshoot is not covered by that margin, and the year needs planning before you file. A business starting above EGP 20 million cannot join.
Does Law 6/2025 replace VAT or e-receipts?
No. If you are VAT-registered you still charge the standard 14%, and registration stays compulsory from EGP 500,000 of turnover; inside the regime you file VAT quarterly instead of monthly. E-invoices and e-receipts stay mandatory and are a condition of the regime. Around Sharm El Sheikh, consumer sales have required e-receipts since 1 November 2022.
