Signing company documents

A tax status certificate in Egypt (شهادة الموقف الضريبي) shows your position with the Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA) on the day it is issued. As of October 2026, the request is simple: it is made online through the taxpayer portal, no documents are needed, and the certificate is collected at your tax office. What the certificate shows is another matter. It reflects your file as it stands, so the work is in keeping that file clean before you ask. This guide covers the request, the single tax registration number behind it, and the points that most often leave a file in poor standing.

How to request a tax status certificate in Egypt

According to the ETA's FAQ, as of October 2026:

Step What happens
1. Request Online, through the ETA taxpayer portal, under your tax registration number
2. Documents None required for the request
3. Collection At your tax office

You need working access to the portal. Returns are filed electronically with an e-signature, so a business that files its own returns usually has that access already. If your accountant files for you, ask who holds the portal access and the e-signature, and make sure the business can reach them too.

Which ETA portal does your business use?

There are two filing systems as of October 2026. Taxpayers of the large and medium taxpayer centres, and of the merged Cairo and Qalyubia offices, file through the new core tax system on eta.gov.eg. Other taxpayers use the ETA e-services portal at eservice.incometax.gov.eg. Check which system holds your file before you look for the request.

One tax registration number for every tax

The Unified Tax Procedures Law 206/2020 brought the procedures for income tax, VAT, stamp tax and the development fee under one law. Each taxpayer has a single tax registration number for all of them. According to Deloitte's 2026 summary, the registration certificate is issued within 5 business days of a complete file.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a problem under one tax, such as a missing VAT return, sits in the same file as your income tax. Second, the number on your e-invoices and e-receipts, your returns and your tax card is the same number, so a mismatch anywhere shows up everywhere.

What keeps your tax file in good standing

The certificate is only as good as the file behind it. These are the points we check first:

  • Every return filed. Monthly VAT (quarterly in the simplified regime), quarterly payroll (Form 4) and the annual settlement, and the annual income tax return: 31 March for individuals, 30 April for companies with a December year-end.
  • E-invoices and e-receipts issued. Every ETA taxpayer must issue e-invoices, and in the Sharm El Sheikh area every business selling to consumers must issue e-receipts (ETA Decision 484/2022). Gaps here show up in your data.
  • Old disputes settled. Requests to settle pending disputes under Law 79/2016, renewed by Law 152/2026, can be filed until 31 December 2026.
  • Tax paid. Late payment carries interest at the Central Bank rate plus 2%, capped at 100% of the tax (Law 7/2025).

Documents in English, Italian or Russian

Documents may be filed with the ETA in any language, with an accredited Arabic translation attached (Deloitte, 2026). For a foreign owner, a contract, bank statement or parent-company document from abroad does not need to be rewritten in Arabic, but the translation must be accredited.

Compliant taxpayers: the white list and the distinction card

The second tax facilitation package, in force since 29 July 2026, announced rewards for compliant taxpayers: a white list chosen automatically on risk criteria, and a tax distinction card in platinum, gold or silver, with faster VAT refunds for card holders. As of October 2026 these are announced and implementation is pending. A taxpayer with a clean file is best placed to benefit when they do.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need for a tax status certificate in Egypt?

None for the request itself. According to the Egyptian Tax Authority's FAQ, the tax status certificate is requested online through the taxpayer portal without supporting documents and is then collected at your tax office. You need access to the portal for your tax registration number, as of October 2026.

What is the tax registration number in Egypt?

Under the Unified Tax Procedures Law 206/2020, each taxpayer has one tax registration number used for all taxes: income tax, VAT, stamp tax and the development fee. The registration certificate is issued within 5 business days of a complete file, according to Deloitte's 2026 summary.

Can I get a clean tax status if I have an open dispute?

The certificate reflects your file as it stands, so open disputes and unfiled returns are part of the picture. Requests to settle pending disputes under Law 79/2016, renewed by Law 152/2026, can be filed until 31 December 2026. Settling old disputes before you need the certificate is usually the cleaner route.

Can I submit documents to the Egyptian Tax Authority in English?

Yes. Documents may be filed in any language with an accredited Arabic translation attached, according to Deloitte's 2026 summary. For foreign owners this means contracts and statements from abroad do not have to be redrafted in Arabic, but the translation must be accredited.

What penalties apply if my tax returns are late?

As of October 2026, filing up to 60 days late carries EGP 3,000 to 50,000, and more than 60 days late EGP 50,000 to 2 million, doubled or tripled for repeat offences within 3 years. Late payment adds interest at the Central Bank rate plus 2%, capped at 100% of the tax.
